BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — An illegal apartment in East Boston has been condemned after being discovered by the city. The city said the two bedroom apartment, built in a garage, was outfitted to hold up to 20 people.

An emergency hearing was held on the apartment on Thursday morning.

Boston Inspectional Services told WBZ NewsRadio that the apartment had acted as a pad for flight attendants to rest after their trips, and that 19 of them had been renting the apartment. The city said rent went for $300 a month.

Inspectional Services said the Boston Fire Department received a complaint from a tenant about a fire panel on the property — from there, they discovered the apartment on the second floor.

The garage is on Geneva street, about five minutes from Logan Airport.

Inspectional Services said the apartment was missing smoke detectors, stored hazardous material like gasoline, and had no second means of egress normally required in city apartments.
