CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It's curtains for ImprovBoston after more than 40 years of classes and shows that brought up thousands of comics.
The organization announced that it cannot fiscally keep the program running, and that classes will wind down with ending shows.
"Certainly our fans should look out for an ending show— we're going to try to put together the last couple shows in January," Managing Director Matt Laidlaw told WBZ's James Rojas.
Laidlaw says the pandemic forced ImprovBoston to move out of its mainstay location in Central Square and never really regained its footing afterward.
"We did have a theater space at 40 Prospect Street, it was amazing space, 140 seat theater, but sadly we lost that space. I'm incredibly sad because we're losing the history and the gem of the organization in Cambridge," Laidlaw said.

In the fall of ImprovBoston, those who want to support comics should keep an eye out for performances at local theaters, where many are likely to do standup or skits.
"Lack of regular shows on regular weekends and being able to do what we did before, ultimately led to us having to close," Laidlaw said.
Officials say the door is not closed to ImprovBoston coming back someday.
