PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WBZ NewsRadio) – A Rhode Island distillery launched its newest product on Thursday and its kind of a new twist on surf and turf, but without the food.

Industrious Spirit Distilling Company in Providence specializes in making sustainably sourced vodka, gins and bourbons. Now the company believes they have created the first oyster-distilled vodka in the United States.

CEO Manya Rubenstein said her and business partners first thought of the idea to create Ostreida while celebrating a milestone.

“We were as team toasting our first year in business down at the Matunuck Oyster Bar,” she explained, “[when] we all got to thinking ‘wouldn’t it be so amazing to combine these two things?' We tried it [and were] totally blown away by the flavor.”

The vodka is made by adding freshly caught oysters at the end of the distilling process. The result is a smooth yet slightly briny mixture that has just the faintest scent of oysters.

“Ostreida Oyster Vodka captures the spirit of the ocean,” Industrious wrote on its website. “Like waves of briny bliss lapping the shore, sea spray on your skin, the warmth of the sun on the sand, Ostreida is the perfect expression of land and sea.”

In part of the company’s commitment to support regenerative farming practices, Industrious will donate a portion of the sales from each bottle of Ostreida to GreenWave – an organization that trains and supports ocean farmers to help create a blue economy.
