BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The MBTA announced that service on the Blue Line between Bowdoin and Orient Heights would be cancelled this weekend, citing upcoming intense winter weather as the reason.

On Thursday, the MBTA stated in a press release that while the suspension was originally intended to be from Bowdoin to the Airport, it was extended to Orient Heights to allow Operations Control Center personnel “to better manage switch infrastructure during extremely cold temperatures.

On Jan. 24 and 25, there will be alternate options for Blue Line riders provided by the MBTA for those traveling between Bowdoin and Orient Heights. Shuttle buses will make stops between the serviced areas, except for Bowdoin, Government Center, State, and Aquarium.

The East Boston Ferry will offer free services as well during the weekend operation. More information on ferry schedules can be found here.  There will also be free fares at Airport, Wood Island, Orient Heights, Suffolk Downs, Beachmont, Revere Beach, and Wonderland fare gates.

The MBTA warns riders to budget for an extra 30 to 40 minutes in addition to their usual commute if using the shuttle buses. More information on the Blue Line suspension and services can be found on their website here.
