BROOKLINE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Authorities are investigating after an MIT professor was fatally shot in his Brookline home Monday night.

The Norfolk County District Attorney's Office said Professor Nuno Loureiro, 47, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died Tuesday morning.

Loureiro was a faculty member of both the Nuclear Science & Engineering and Physics departments at MIT. He was also the director of MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center.

"Our deepest sympathies are with his family, students, colleagues, and all those who are grieving," an MIT spokesperson said. "Focused outreach and conversations are taking place within our community to offer care and support for those who knew Prof. Loureiro, and a message will be shared with our wider community."
