LOWELL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – The Jack Kerouac Estate has announced its formation of a new foundation which is intended to further the legacy of the famous writer and artist Jack Kerouac.

The center will be located at the former St. Jean Baptiste Church in Lowell at which the author used to attend. CEO Jim Sampas said Kerouac’s funeral mass was held there as well.

“There’s a real significance there,” Sampras said, “and I think the location is just beautiful.”

The fundraising comes ahead of Kerouac’s 100th birthday, which will fall on March 12. Sampras believes the center will bring more visitors to Lowell on top of the many who already come to see Kerouac’s grave.
