BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – The Johnson & Johnson vaccine previously showed a lower efficacy in fighting Covid-19, but that may not be the case in the battle against the Delta Variant.
Nearly 300,000 people in Massachusetts chose to get the one-shot J&J vaccine. Early reports showed it was 66% effective in protection from moderate to severe strains of the virus.
This is in contrast to up to 90% efficacy rates in competing shots including Moderna and Pfizer.

Dr. Vandana Madhavan with Mass General Hospital for Children says a recent study shows that the J&J vaccine is closing in on the gap between it and other vaccines when it comes to the now dominant variant.
By looking at a specific study of the vaccine in healthcare workers in South Africa, Madhavan said the results showed the J&J shot is “actually better protection against the Delta Variant then earlier variants as far as SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus that causes Covid-19.”
Madhavan added that the vaccine has a 71% effective rate against hospitalizations and a 96% effective rate against death.
