MA Judge Accused Of Helping Defendant Evade ICE Will Still Collect Pay

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Newton judge accused of letting a defendant evade ICE officers will continue to draw a paycheck after all.

Judge Shelley Joseph is facing federal obstruction of justice charges for allegedly helping an undocumented immigrant escape out the back door of her courtroom to avoid the ICE agent who was waiting inside the building to take him into custody in 2018.

Following those charges, Joseph was suspended without pay.

However, the Commonwealth's highest court ruled in a 5-1 decision that Joseph can be paid her $181,000 salary as she deals with her case.

Only Justice Frank Gaziano dissented, writing this created a special policy only for judges.
