BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Jury selection will continue on Monday in the Karen Read murder trial.
Two jurors were excused after three were selected for the panel last week. Judge Beverly Cannone wants to add two more jurors to the roster. The goal is to seat 12 jurors and six alternates.
Read and her supporters have faced several legal setbacks in recent days. The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to delay Read's retrial while it decides whether or not to hear her double jeopardy appeal. Read asked the court to dismiss her second-degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident charges. The court will consider hearing her case on April 25.
A federal judge has also upheld a ruling that expanded a buffer zone, blocking protestors from the lawn next to the Norfolk Superior Court. This decision comes after U.S. District Judge Myong J. Joun dismissed the motion from Read's supporters, who claimed their First Amendment rights were impeded by the order from Cannone.
Read is accused of hitting her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, with her car and leaving him to die in the snow.
