CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Cambridge held a bird watching event on Friday at the Mount Auburn Cemetery.

According to the city, the Earth Day Bird Walk celebrated “migration, global perspectives, Earth Day and why it matters now more than ever.”

While some may think the cemetery would be an unorthodox location for a bird watching event, cemetery employee Jason actually thought the area is ideal for it, and he joins in on the bird watching during his breaks.

“Because it’s big enough, people can kind of spread out, enjoy the landscape, and there’s plenty of birds spread throughout the cemetery, so people can kind of go at their own pace and some people spend whole days here,” Jason said. “It’s really exciting and you kind of get lost in the moment and all the other things fade away, all the stress of real life sometimes.”

John Edmondson of the Brookline Bird Club agreed with Jason’s sentiment, saying that the cemetery’s landscape attracts wildlife.

“Imagine coming over to Boston if you're a little bird and seeing a big green area, this would be where you land,” Edmondson said.

Along with the bird watching, the city also planted a tree in honor of Arbor Day. Vice President of Horticulture & Landscape for Mount Auburn Ronnit Bendavid-Val spoke about the planting.

“It’s a Royal Raindrops Crabapple, it's in a planting hole, we have a little pile of dirt next to it with a few shovels,” Bendavid-Val said. “This is gonna be a staff event to plant this tree in honor of Arbor Day, so we have a few shovels here so staff can join in and help plant the tree.”

This bird walk was part of a series of events that were planned in conjunction with the launch of Sustainable Cambridge, an initiative to address climate change and keep the city welcoming.
