DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Karen Read retrial in Norfolk Superior Court was canceled for the day on Tuesday due to “unavoidable circumstances,” according to a court spokesperson.

CBS News Boston's Kristina Rex reported Read is sick. Testimony was expected to continue Tuesday, with a new witness taking the stand.

Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Yuri Buhkenik spent three days on the stand before being dismissed Monday afternoon.

Buhkenik was former State Police Trooper Michael Proctor's supervisor. Proctor was the lead investigator and was later fired from the Massachusetts State Police over his conduct in the case.

Proctor had sent derogatory text messages about Read during the investigation. Bukhenik read the messages aloud to the jury.

He also was instructed to read flirty text messages Read had exchanged with Brian Higgins in the weeks before Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe's death. O'Keefe and Read were dating at the time.

While on the stand, Bukhenik also answered questions about the investigation, including O'Keefe's injuries, evidence collection and possible witness and evidence tampering.

Read is accused of hitting O’Keefe with her car and leaving him in the snow to die outside of a home in Canton on Jan. 29, 2022. The defense claims Read has been framed.
