BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — One child was taken to the hospital and others were sickened at a Roxbury K-8 school after eating what officials think is a weed edible.

Boston Police were called to the Tobin School in Roxbury just after noon on Monday for a report of students who had eaten "marijuana infused chocolate bars." One student was taken to the hospital as a precaution, while a handful of others were treated by the school nurse and released to their parents.

In a letter home to parents, Principal Natasha Halfkenny said "multiple middle school students ingested what appeared to be a cannabis-infused food item, otherwise commonly known as an edible."

In a statement, Boston Public Schools said that the district was "deeply concerned about the recent reports of students ingesting edibles," and that they were "encouraging parents, guardians, and caregivers to take an active role in helping us ensure our students are aware of the risks associated with consuming these products and that they understand the potential consequences."

Police estimated that between 6 and 9 children had taken ill, total. Halfkenny said an investigation was ongoing.
