BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Tuesday at City Hall Plaza was all about toys during the first ever International Day of Play, a day dedicated to the importance and celebration of two of the simplest things out there, having fun and playing with some toys.

Kids build little mini forts, and then volunteers from the Museum of Science pour a bucket of plastic snowballs down a ramp to see whose will be left standing.

“We’ve done a lot of learning about playful learning as a concept, and it’s mostly about allowing kids to take ownership of the experience,” said a someone from the Lego Group, who sponsored the event.

The Lego group pushed for this new International Day in front of the U.N., as evidenced by all the buckets of Legos everywhere.

Scott Slifka is Lego’s General Counsel for the America’s and spoke to WBZ NewsRadio about the event.

“The more kids can play, the better it is for their development, for their mental health [and] for their general well-being. Sadly though, kids aren’t doing it as much as they used to,” Slifka said.

“I still collect Lego’s, it’s a lot of fun for me, and I find this very fun,” said one of the kids in attendance.
