LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The grades are in for the 2023 Metropolitan Beaches Water Quality Report Card and it's not looking good for King's Beach that crosses through both Lynn and Swampscott.

The report from the non-profit Save the Harbor / Save the Bay used beach data from last year, deeming King's Beach most recent rating as 74-percent, the worst in the Metro area. The North Shore beach continues to dwell towards the bottom of the chart, whereas Dorchester beaches at Savin Hill and Malibu have seen drastic improvements in comparison.

Tenean Beach on the Neponset River came above King's this year, with an annual rating much higher at 89-percent.

Many who visit King's Beach say there's a putrid smell coming from the water, something that reeks of sewage.

WBZ's Brooke McCarthy spoke to beachgoers at King's who were not surprised by the shoreline's water quality. One woman says she turned around from swimming when she saw red flags and "no swim" signs at the beach.

"I was going in the water, and I saw the sign 'not safe for swimming, bacteria levels are high,' so that's why I'm here.' It doesn't make the beach very attractive to come to," one resident said.
