BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The glowing landmark that's been a constant and quiet observer of every Red Sox home game is moving.

Due to the development of a $200 million, seven-story office space threatening to block the view of the CITGO sign, it will be lifted 30 feet higher and moved about 120 feet east on top of its existing building.

"I think it goes back years, a lot of history involved," one local said.

The well known landmark has existed over Fenway Park since 1940.

"Everything's like subjects and change around here with all this development, so it's like at least we're keeping it. So I was like, I could settle 400 feet away on the same building," Paul, another local, said.

Mayor Michelle Wu said the change will make sure the sign will continue to shine and be seen for years to come.

"We care about the sign, but times change. Move the sign up. Get some union workers up there, they'll move it safely and build some buildings," one Everett resident said.
