LAKEVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Lakeville Fire Department said it responded to a liquid chlorine spill early Sunday morning that shut down two streets in the town.

The fire department got the call at around 3:00 AM Sunday morning for a "large and continuous" chlorine spill at the Charles J. Rocheleau Water Filtration Plant in Taunton.

A state HAZMAT team was called in and stretches of Precinct and Montgomery Streets had to be shut down, though the department noted that no homes were evacuated.

The total containment and cleanup effort lasted well into the morning and wrapped up at around 10:00 AM.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is investigating the spill, but so far, it seems to have been an accident.
