TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A museum dedicated to Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird officially opened Thursday in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The Larry Bird Museum is just down the road from Bird's alma mater Indiana State University, which he attended from 1976 to 1979 before embarking on his hall of fame career with the Celtics.

As a member of the C's until his retirement in 1992, Bird became a three-time NBA Champion, three-time NBA MVP, two-time NBA Finals MVP, and 12-time NBA All-Star. He also won an Olympic gold medal as part of the "Dream Team," the 1992 U.S. Men's basketball team.

Following retirement, he served as head coach of the Indiana Pacers from 1997 to 2000, winning NBA Coach of the Year and leading the Pacers to the 2000 NBA Finals. Bird is currently a consultant for the Pacers.

The museum is a deep dive into Bird's life and career, including family photos, footage of Bird's high school years, never-before-seen interviews with teammates and rivals, and the many trophies he earned over the years.

The museum is open Wednesdays through Sundays and guests must book a reservation online, but admission is free.

"He did this for his fans, he did this for the kids, so absolutely free of charge," Museum Committee co-chair Terri Conley told WBZ NewsRadio.
