Lawrence Opening Emergency Homeless Shelters

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Two emergency shelters are opening in the Merrimack Valley to help people who are either homeless or close to being homeless, and have been affected by the coronavirus.

Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera says the Doubletree By Hilton on River Road in Andover has 80 rooms available starting Friday for individuals, and families. A second shelter is set to open in the next two weeks, but the location has not been announced.

Rivera says the shelters will provide a safe environment for vulnerable people, such as someone without a home who needs to be quarantined because they’ve been exposed to the virus. He says for homeless people who already have the virus, a shelter has opened in Lexington that currently houses 13 patients, with room for more.
