HULL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Surf's up! Northeast Surfing's youth summer camps are in session at Nantasket Beach in Hull, where kids are taught the right and safe way to surf.
A group of young surfers gathered around Ronnie Lee, the surf school's manager, Wednesday morning on the beach. He said students are taught the basics, like paddling and getting up on the board. But Lee said the most important lesson is how to surf safely.
"Making sure they're not surfing into each other, making sure they're practicing safety techniques that they will have with them for the rest of their life," Lee said.
He said students are also taught about the lineup, which is the area in the ocean just past where the waves break and where surfers wait to catch waves. The lineup also refers to the unwritten social code of what surfers get priority to ride an incoming wave.
"Technically, they are in groups of five." And, it's important that every surfer in the group knows whose turn it is to try and catch a wave.
The kids, meanwhile, were having a blast. "It's really fun!" shouted one excited student.
It's not just kids; Northeast Surfing teaches people of all ages to surf. That includes private lessons and adult surf camps.
