BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A major toy manufacturer has its new home in Boston.
LEGO officially opened its new U.S. headquarters with a ribbon-cutting held Thursday.
Along with LEGO Group CEO Niels Christiansen, Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu attended the ceremony that was held on Boylston Street.
LEGO had been based in Connecticut since 1975 but said it decided to relocate to Boston for its proximity to schools and universities and getting better access to a wider talent pool.
Governor Healey welcomed LEGO to Boston saying how much kids love Legos.
In fact, she said, so do adults, like her. "I think we all have kids and know what kids get, and adults too," she said. "I like to unwind with Legos sometimes myself too."
Mayor Wu said the LEGOS move to Boston is just another example of the city being a leader. "Boston will never back down from being a beacon of hope, from being a beacon of innovation, and from being a community where everyone can tap into their fullest potential."
Christiansen said he's looking forward to the move. "It's a real great pleasure for me to be back in Boston. It is my favorite American city for this very, very special day," he said to applause.
Relationship-building has already begun with the company donating millions to the Boston Public Library, Museum of Science, and the Boston Children's Museum.
LEGOS Headquarters is located at 1001 Boylston St.
Its transition from Enfield Ct. to Boston is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
