LEOMINSTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Leominster Mayor Dean Mazzarella said the city has backed off its evacuation order for residents in several low-lying neighborhoods after Monday night's storm.

The evacuation order stemmed from erosion damage on the Barrett Park and Distributing Reservoir dams. Residents are now safe to return to their residence after contractors reinforced the dams.

Many streets in Leominster remain closed due to damage, including Pleasant St. where a massive sinkhole extends across both lanes. Tow trucks removed cars that were flooded out during the storm.

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healy visited Leominster earlier on Tuesday, Sept. 12 to survey the damages. After consulting with local officials, Healy said she is drawing up a statewide state of emergency declaration that will be implemented later on Tuesday night.
