DOUGLAS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — ‘Goose,’ the 5-foot-long water monitor lizard that first went missing about two weeks ago in Webster, continues to cross town lines.
Massachusetts Environmental Police confirmed a new sighting of the wandering reptile in a Facebook post yesterday. Goose was most recently spotted in Douglas just two days ago.
“We appreciate the public’s continued cooperation and ask that you help us spread awareness — not panic,” the post said.
Officers said they responded to the area immediately after someone snapped a photo but still could not locate the reptile.
Authorities are now working closely with Rain Forest Reptiles, a group of reptile specialists, to help them safely capture the animal, according to the post.
Webster police said the reptile initially escaped an area home before another sighting found the lizard in Thompson, Conn.
If spotted again, authorities advise people to not approach the animal before reporting its whereabouts.
"Leave the area immediately — as a captive-bred reptile, it may associate humans with food and could approach,” said environmental police.
It is illegal to own a water monitor in Massachusetts, and officers said they are continuing to investigate Goose being kept without proper authorization.
