BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Local animal rights activists handed out plant-based turkey products at Copley Square, offering an alternative centerpiece to the traditional bird this Thanksgiving.
Laura Ray is with the local People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) group which handed out about 50 Tofurky, a tofu-based meat alternative, to passersby.
“[It’s] plant-based cruelty free, have a vegan Thanksgiving,” she told WBZ NewsRadio.
According to a recent World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, Americans will consume nearly 4.48 billion pounds of turkey this Thanksgiving holiday.
Meanwhile, PETA is hoping their message inspires some people to trade up poultry for plant-based options.
“Turkeys are quite smart actually,” Ray said. “I don’t understand why anyone would want to eat a turkey for Thanksgiving when you can have a nice cruelty-free Tofurky roast.”
Karen Rapalolo said that fake meat tastes great, and people were grateful for some food, especially at this time of year.
“Just think about going plant-based, it’s actually cheaper,” Rapalolo said.
