BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Cash and coins may be slowly falling out of favor as payment methods, but that’s not the case for Stack's Bowers Galleries, a rare-coin collection and auction house.

The company has been auctioning off coins since 1935. They are celebrating the 90-year milestone by giving back to the community.

“To educate the public more about numismatic and coin collecting, we decided to launch a treasure hunt,” Stanley Chu, manager of the store on State Street, told WBZ NewsRadio.

He added that they hope by giving out special prizes through this challenge will inspire the next generation of coin collectors.

“We have classic gold coins pre-1933,” Chu said. “We have those ‘Morgan Dollars’ that people ordinarily spend here in Boston. We have a note from Faneuil Hall Bank back in the 1800s.”

From Oct. 7 -11, the company will hide a certificate around the city that can be exchanged for collectibles valued from $300 to $3,500 from their stores.

Chu said the excitement surrounding the treasure hunt already has fans staking out the storefront at Faneuil Hall.

“Every single coin was minted for a reason,” Chu added. “It reflects the political aspect of the time period, the art and culture of the time period, who was involved, who was empowered.”

Clues of each daily hunt will be posted on social media for players to decipher.

Next week, the hunt will move to New York City from Oct. 14 -28, followed by Philadelphia from Oct. 21 - 25 and lastly Miami from Oct. 28 to Nov. 1.
