BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — For Teresa Thompson Maynard, having a nut allergy was not easy.
"I couldn't just go to a bakery and buy baked goods," she said. "I used to do data analytics for Harvard and when I was pregnant with our third child I was in search of a cupcake like a crazy person."
That's when she decided to start baking her own nut-free treats. Not long after she quit her job at Harvard and started her own business out of CommonwealthKitchen. Now she and her husband Kelvin Maynard Jr. are getting ready to open a brick-and-mortar bakery in a space of their own in Dorchester called Sweet Teez Bakery.
"The best part about being in this space is we will be one hundred percent nut-free," Thompson Maynard said. "We will have the control to make sure that everyone who walks through the door with a nut allergy can eat anything out of here safely."
The new bakery will be on Dorchester Avenue in the Savin Hill neighborhood where Thompson Maynard grew up. Maynard Jr. said they are excited to have their business there.
"Our kids go to the boys and girls club that's right around the corner," he said. "We spend a lot of time in this neighborhood so we want to be able to do this for this neighborhood."
The new space is under construction now and is slated to open in the Fall of 2025.
"Our ceilings will be pink because I can't help myself," Thompson Maynard said.
