NAHANT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A group of Girl Scouts hopes to keep beaches cleaner in Nahant, Mass.

Local Girl Scout Troop 62860 has put up new beach clean-up stations at Short Beach and Tudor Beach, hoping to inspire fellow beachgoers to help pick up litter. The project earned the Girl Scouts a Silver Award, one of the highest awards in the program.

13-year-olds Ione Byam Miller, Maeve Nugent, Julianne Sheehan and Eliana Uzcategui were all a part of the project. Their clean-up stations were unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday.

“It was a really proud feeling to look around and see all these people that were excited about what we did,” said Byam Miller.

They said the stations are designed to make it easier for beachgoers to help keep the beaches clean.

“It’s a big wooden pole and it’s got a wooden basket that contains a few yellow baskets,” said Byam-Miller. “We have a sign that explains what the baskets are for. You take a basket; you pick up litter and you empty it and return it.”

Nahant Safer Waters in Massachusetts (SWIM) was happy to help fund the project.

“This encourages people to clean up every time they go to the beach,” said Nahant SWIM President Vy Patek.
