Local Musician Leads Facebook Sing-Alongs Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Self-isolation and quarantine have led famous artists to livestream shows from their homes, and local artists in Massachusetts are joining in.

Charlie Carrozo, singer-songwriter of the band Way Up South, has been performing solo shows on Facebook Live. He says he was surprised by how much he needed that connection with people, even if virtually.

"It's been some good therapy for me to do it," Carrozo told WBZ NewsRadio's Drew Moholland. "A lot of people are cooking dinner listening to it and sending me pictures of the meals they're cooking while they're watching or listening, it's been great."

He got the idea he saw other musicians going online. Carrozo treats the streams like a live-performance, even setting down his guitar and leading a sing-along — and his audience is finding unique ways to participate.

"I'm really starting to have fun with it," Carrozo said. "You see in the comments are putting up the clap emojis during the clapping times and they're singing the lyrics during the sing-along time, they're typing it in."

He's trying to avoid repeating any songs, which has prompted him to learn more on the guitar.

Carrozo has been performing every night at 7 p.m. for about an hour, featuring covers of songs by artists like John Fogerty, Neil Young, and Melissa Etheridge.
