STONEHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Local non-profit organization Earthwise Aware is helping people study and protect nature.
According to their website, Earthwise Aware scientifically documents the ecological health of its habitats and involves communities through its biodiversity and climate participatory science programs in the Fells.
WBZ NewsRadio caught up with Earthwise President Claire O’Neill in the Middlesex Fells Reservation, who was collecting valuable information about plants, bugs, and birds.
“I do not think that there is a single conservation problem that’s going to be solved in isolation. We need the help of everybody, [and] we need the eyes of everybody together,” O’Neill said.
O’Neill said that they openly share the data online to improve conservation efforts.
Kathleen Shea was among the naturalists documenting their findings on the changing biodiversity.
“[Birds] are not as bold as the common species, you’ll see a song sparrow, other species are hiding, but they’re there,” Shea said.

Shea is an advisor and naturalist. She used an app to collect data on her surroundings at the Fells.
“We’ve collected more than half a million data points at locations since 2018. [that’s] pretty impressive, I think,” O’Neill added.
“The best people to really defend nature around urban habitats are the people themselves.”
