REVERE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — When firefighters in Revere aren't putting out fires, they'll be pumping iron thanks to a generous donation.

The Planet Fitness of East Boston donated thousands of dollars of gym equipment to the Revere Fire Department, as the gym undergoes a renovation. The donation included treadmills, stationary bikes, new sets of dumbells, free weights, and a cable machine. All four of Revere's fire stations received equipment.

Revere Fire Lieutenant Michael O'Hara told WBZ's Brooke McCarthy the donation will help the firefighters stay in shape, which is essential for a job like this.

"We climb stairs constantly and we're always moving around," O'Hara said. "Fighting fires can exhaust you so you have to be physically in shape for this job."

O'Hara reached secured the donation by reaching out to the gym's owners. He thanked Christy White, Danielle D’Amelio, and Owner Sal DeMartinis for working with him to donate all of the equipment. He said it was fitting that the new gym equipment is being kept in a room at the station with purple walls.

"With the equipment they gave us it's like a mini Planet Fitness in here," O'Hara said.
