PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Several police stations across the state are collecting unwanted medication for the Drug Enforcement Agency’s annual Prescription Drug Take Back Day Saturday.

In Plymouth County, drop-off boxes are set up at local police stations for residents to safely dispose their unwanted medications, from tablets, capsules, patches and any solid forms of prescription drugs to veterinary drugs.

Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said the city collected about 335 tons of drugs last year.

“It’s best for us to take away that opportunity and get rid of the things that we don’t need anymore not have them hanging around,” he said, adding that flushing the pills could harm the environment.

The goal is to spread awareness about the danger of mishandling drugs, and that even a small step like this is important to keep illegal drugs off the streets.

“People that don’t really understand the kind of meds that they have do have a street value and they can be stolen even from your home,” Cruz said.

Permanent medication boxes are located at every police department in Plymouth County for residents to drop-off unused pills anytime.
