REVERE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Just steps away from the picturesque views of the water, some local vendors gather along Revere Beach.
More than 250 farmer markets exist in Massachusetts. This is the second year a group of them has set up shop on Revere Beach. The market gives local residents an affordable opportunity to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables.
Small businesses and local farmers showcase baked goods, handmade products, and fresh produce every Friday, servicing an area with scarce access to food outlets.
"Shirley Avenue district and some of the places, Oak Island, and places like that are food deserts," said resident Brian Harkins.

This year, the city of Revere has introduced several new voucher programs for two of the farmers' market vendors, Riverdale Farms and Farmer Dave. Thanks to a partnership with Mass in Motion and Cambridge Health Alliance's Department of Community Health, seniors can pick up a $30 voucher at Rossetti-Cowan Senior Center, while WIC recipients can grab a $30 voucher from their local provider. SNAP recipients who spend at least $15 on benefits will get a $15 voucher through their SNAP match program.
"This provides the ability to get fresh food. If you're on Snap, they get a return on the dollars that they spend at this," remarked Harkins.
This year, the market will run through Sept. 26.
