LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Around hundred members of the Saint Mary's High School track team cheered their teammates as they took part in a special relay marathon Monday.
The Lynn private high school students ran around the track at Manning Field and passed the baton until their steps added up to 26.2 miles, a full marathon.
The relay was in honor of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old boy killed in the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. Money raised during the event was donated to the Martin Richard Foundation, which promotes sportsmanship, inclusion, kindness, and peace in the community.
"This is a great thing to do as a team, you know, have our kids aware, even if they were too young to remember that," said track and field coach Tristan Smith.
"I think it’s really nice and that we should do this every year," sophomore Samatha Sok said.
The school hopes to raise at least $1,000 for the foundation. The three students who raise the most money will receive a prize.
