PEABODY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Officials in Peabody, Mass. are hoping to make safety changes to an intersection that has been described as “troubling.”

The area in question is in Lynn, Mass. on the intersection of Lynnfield Street and Casco Road, which is impacting traffic in the Leather City.

At a City Council meeting on July 11, Peabody Councilor At-Large Thomas Rossignoll put forward a draft ordinance for Lynn that would prohibit left turns from Lynnfield Street onto Casco Road and vice-versa.

“There are some significant and troubling safety concerns regarding that entrance,” said Rossignoll at the meeting.

Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson released a statement pushing back on the ordinance.

“The legal opinion of the Lynn Law Department, which has been communicated to the City of Peabody, is that the City of Peabody is not authorized to enact this type of regulation without the approval of the City of Lynn,” said Nicholson in the statement.

Nicholson continued to say that Lynn is open to a “joint discussion” on how to improve the intersection.

“Though we have concerns about unintended consequences of the regulation as initially proposed, we certainly want to address traffic and safety issues and have had productive discussions with the City of Peabody about this area,” said Nicholson in the statement.
