LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Lynn is hopeful that its summer youth employment program will help inspire the next generation of first responders. For a third year, the Lynn Fire Department is among the departments participating in the program.
Lynn Fire Lt. Dennis Ring said students "learn all different aspects of firefighting, from structural firefighting, hazmat, confined space, tech rescue search. So, we’re excited that they are going to be doing this."
Students will also be paid $16.25 per hour, thanks to a grant given to the Department of Community.
“For youth who are looking for a summer job, not only are you getting paid, but you’re learning as well,” Lt. Ring added.

Ring said that being a firefighter was always a lifelong dream of his.
“I was one of those kids growing up who I knew as a kid that I wanted to be a fireman that was my goal in life, and this program absolutely helped advance that," he said.
In a statement to WBZ NewsRadio, Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson said the youth employment program "not only cultivates [students'] skills and aspiration but also fosters transformative impact in the community."
“The partnership with the Police Department and Fire Department through their youth academies provides accessible resources and professional growth and instills a sense of civic leadership," Mayor Nicholson said. "There has been an enthusiastic response this year from our applicants and the city remains committed to these programs to enrich our youth’s experiences and hopefully prepare the next group of leaders in the Police, Fire, and City Departments."
The Lynn Police Department is also taking in students and young adults ages 16-21 for the summer months.
