CHELSEA, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A teenager from Lynn is being held without bail on charges in connection with a shooting in Chelsea last week that seriously wounded a 68-year-old woman.

Jefferson Barillas is facing charges of assault with intent to murder a person over 60, assault and battery with a firearm, illegal possession of a gun and ammunition, and shooting a gun within 500 feet of a home. He will be held until a dangerousness hearing on May 2.

Police arrested Barillas in Malden Tuesday on charges in connection with the shooting on Thursday, April 21 that seriously wounded a 68-year-old woman who was getting into her car. The following day, police noticed Barillas while he was stopped in traffic and tried to approach him, but he then took off in his rental car and hit a detective, according to Chelsea Police.

After being shot, the woman tried to drive herself to the hospital but was later picked up by an ambulance. She was shot in the upper right arm and chest, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office. Chelsea Police said they do not believe she was the intended target of the shooting.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said shootings like these rip into the fabric of the communities they happen in.

"This is not just a case just for the Chelsea Police Department, this is a case for our entire community and our society at large," District Attorney Hayden said. "It is literally a miracle that this woman is alive and I trust hope and remain to pray that she'll continue to do well in her recovery."
