BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The tails' side of the 2020 Massachusetts one-dollar 'Innovation Coin' features a design created by artist Emily Damstra.
Damstra said she wanted to recognize one of the state's most famous inventions, patented in 1876:
The design features the dial of an early rotary telephone. It is to commemorate that the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in the state of Massachusetts. I thought that would be a great image for a coin, not just because it's a perfect circle, it fits nicely onto a coin, but also because it's an image most people would recognize as part of a telephone.
She said it "feels amazing" to see her design sculpted onto a U.S. Mint coin, which are available for sale on the Mint's website.
