MILBRIDGE, Maine. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Another group of workers at a blueberry processing facility in Maine have tested positive for COVID-19, state health officials said. This marks the state's third reported cluster of coronavirus cases at a blueberry farm or processing facility.
As Bangor Daily News reports, the four Wyman's employees had been tested for the virus upon arrival at the company's facility in Milbridge.
According to Wyman's, its products are sold at supermarket chains across New England, including select Stop & Shop, Whole Foods, Shaws, Big Y, Star Market, and Target locations.
Wyman's President and CEO Tony Shuman said the company's seasonal employees are being tested for coronavirus as they arrive for work, during the lead up to the busy harvest season.
“The pre-emptive screening of these employees is working exactly as intended,” Shuman told Bangor Daily News. “As soon as these cases were identified, immediate action was taken to move and isolate the individuals, and anyone traveling with them, into pre-designated quarantine locations. While quarantined, they will be provided the personal and medical care they need, through our relationship with local public health officials, and they will still receive compensation.”
Maine has so far reported more than 3,900 cases of COVID-19 and 124 deaths attributed to the virus.
