PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (WBZ NewsRadio) —  A man suspected of killing his wife at a home in Troy, N.H. was shot and killed by police on the Piscataqua River Bridge Thursday morning.

The bridge, which serves I-95 and connects New Hampshire and Maine, was temporarily shut down in both directions early Thursday morning. Authorities said the man was traveling to Kittery, Maine with his 8-year-old child in the car.

While on the bridge, authorities said the man came out of the car and raised a gun. That was when police fatally shot him, and the suspect fell into the river below. His body was later recovered.

Police said they did not initially know a child was inside the car. They said they discovered the child’s body after the man was shot and killed by officers. Law enforcement say they have information proving the child was not shot by police.

Officials reopened the bridge around 9:50 a.m. on Thursday, after morning traffic had been rerouted for six hours as police investigated the incident.

Authorities have yet to identify the suspect.
