MALDEN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Malden High School warned families about a scam that tried to get students to give out their personal and bank information.
The scammers impersonated school administrators and sent out emails to students about a job opportunity in exchange for their information.
“It’s kind of crazy how people scam like students,” one student who attends the high school said.
Samara, a senior at Malden high school, were among the many who received the scam email and told WBZ NewsRadio that the email address looked really realistic, and she could have easily fell for the scam.
She said she clicked on the link to a webpage and filled out her information but never submitted it because she got scared. “I’m glad I didn’t give out none of my information but you’ve got to be careful with that,” she said.
She added that school administration already sent out a warning to students and parents about the scam.
Police said the scammers also threatened students with physical violence and pictures of guns to get them to comply, but the threats lack credibility and just a scare tactic.
