Malden Police Animal Control Officer Kevin Altkins said they have come across at least six cases involving abandoned pets this past month.

“We find that people are calling in a report of a found dog or cat and we’re later finding out information from witnesses that in fact it was their own pet,” Alkins said.

The specific reasoning behind this increase varies, but Alkins said some possible explanations include difficulty in bringing pets into new housing and costly veterinary expenses.

Alkins emphasized however that no matter what the case may be, there are always better options.

“Chances are the shelters would take your cat or dog from you as well as state licensed rescue groups,” Alkins said.

Alkins also said people could face charges for neglecting their pets.

“If it was your pet, you would do more for the dog’s well-being than taking the route that you did,” Alkins added.

Pet abandonment has not just occurred in Malden but in other surrounding cities and towns with similar resources available, according to Alkins.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston is a resource available to help pets in need.
