The upper age limit requirement meant that to become a Malden Police officer, you would have to be no older than 31-years old.

WBZ NewsRadio spoke with Malden Police Chief Glenn Cronin, who said that he believed the age cap limited the number of qualified candidates.

“I’ve talked to so many people who were 34 years old, 37 years old, 40 years old and I would have to tell them it’s too late [to apply],” Cronin said.

Malden Police have since worked with the mayor and state legislature to receive a home rule petition, meaning they have joined over 70 other cities and towns in the commonwealth that have no upper age limit requirement to serve.

“When you look at the requirements [to serve], they don’t change at all, they’re not prorated based on age, they’re all the same,” Cronin added.

Cronin also added that these new requirements will address the decrease in applications and will also fill a need for a more diverse and experienced workforce.
