Malden Wants To Make Its Courthouse A Community Center

MALDEN, Mass. (WBZ News Radio) - The city of Malden is filing legislation to transfer Malden District Court into the city's control - it wants to turn the courthouse into a multi-purpose performance space. The courthouse has been closed for the last year for renovations and then due to the pandemic. State Reps. Paul Denato and Steven Ultrino helped file the legislation.

The plan is to turn the historic courthouse into the "Malden Center for Arts and Culture." Mayor Gary Christenson says the space will be used for dance, music and theater performances, as well as art exhibits and classes.

"This is something that actually we've been working on for a very long time, and to hopefully have it come to fruition now couldn't be a better feeling," he said.

The city would relocate the courthouse. The state legislature still needs to approve the plan.
