NAIROBI, Kenya (WBZ NewsRadio) —  A man who has been accused of killing his girlfriend in Massachusetts before fleeing to Kenya has escaped police custody there, according to authorities.

Kevin Kangethe, 41, allegedly escaped from the police station where he was being held and jumped into private transportation. Authorities immediately began a new search for him.

Kangethe is charged with killing his girlfriend, Maggie Mbitu of Whitman, before leaving her body at Boston Logan International Airport and getting on a plane to Kenya.

The Associated Press reported that a man claiming to be Kangethe's lawyer asked officers to speak with his client. The suspect was taken into an office, but fled shortly after, leaving the lawyer behind in the room.

Officers pursued the suspect but did not catch him and the alleged lawyer was arrested. The police officers who were on duty at the time of Kangethe’s escape have been taken into custody, according to the AP.

Massachusetts State Police said that they had been working with Kenyan authorities to locate Kangethe, and he was arrested in a nightclub on Jan. 30 after being at large for three months.
