BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A man charged with murdering a Whitman woman whose body was found at Boston Logan International Airport back in November was arrested in Kenya, authorities announced Tuesday.

Kevin Kangethe, 41, of Lowell is suspected of stabbing and killing 31-year-old Maggie Mbitu. Her body was found inside of a car in a parking garage at the airport in early November, just days after her family reported her missing.

Authorities allege that Kangethe boarded a flight to Kenya after the murder. Massachusetts State Police said that the suspect and Mbitu knew each other and had been in a relationship.

Massachusetts, federal, and Kenyan authorities worked together for months to capture the suspect. According to a State Police press release, Kangethe was arrested in a nightclub in Nairobi on Monday night (Kenyan time).

"I’m extremely grateful to the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, the FBI, Kenyan law enforcement agencies, the Kenyan government and the Massachusetts State Police for bringing the person accused of Margaret Mbitu’s brutal murder into custody. Their tremendous and untiring efforts will provide Margaret’s family and friends the opportunity to see Kevin Kangethe face justice for this terrible crime," Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement Tuesday.

Kangethe is expected to appear at a preliminary court hearing in Kenya within the next few days. The process to extradite him to Boston has already begun.
