Man And Estranged Wife Dead In Providence Murder-Suicide

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence police say a man shot and killed his estranged wife before fleeing to another building and killing himself.

Authorities say 50-year-old Oscar Hudson shot 48-year-old Berta Hudson in a street in the city's North End on Saturday afternoon.

Providence's deputy police chief, Thomas Verdi, said a police tactical team later entered an apartment where Oscar Hudson was and found that he had fatally shot himself. Verdi said police had spent more than an hour trying to contact the man without success before storming the apartment.

The police activity left an area near Esek Hopkins Middle School impassable for much of the afternoon.
