NEWTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Newton man was arrested and charged in connection with the apparent triple homicide of three elderly victims inside their Broadways Street home Sunday, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan's office said.

Christopher Ferguson, 41, of Newton, has been charged with murder, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, and burglary.

Police said a person known to the three victims—Gilda D’Amore, 73, her husband Bruno D’Amore, 74, and Mrs. D’Amore’s mother, Lucia Arpino, 97—called 911 after finding them dead inside the home Sunday morning.

The preliminary investigation showed signs of forced entry into the home, including broken glass and missing screens in the basement, police said. Investigators said they were able to locate a video from Albemarle Road that depicted a male walking in that area, less than a mile from the victims' home, at 5:20 a.m. on Sunday.

That man was later identified as Christopher Ferguson, police said.

On Monday, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death for Gilda D’Amore to be multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma, the DA's office said. The autopsies of the other two victims will be concluded on Tuesday, the office added.

The lab also positively matched a footprint belonging to Ferguson to a footprint left in the victims' home, said officials.

Ferguson pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Newton District Court on Tuesday afternoon. He was ordered held without bail. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 25.
