BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Authorities are investigating after a man was fatally struck by an MBTA Orange Line train.

The incident happened just after midnight Saturday. The man appeared to be “unsteady on his feet” while on the platform at the State Street station, according to MBTA Transit Police.

The man stumbled and fell into the right-of-way, or what the MBTA refers to as the pit area. He was then hit by a train travelling northbound.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
