The driver, identified as Christopher Berard-Bulman, 44, of Dedham, was pronounced dead at the scene. A small dog from the vehicle was also discovered dead on scene, police said.

An 8-year-old child was taken to South Shore Hospital, then airlifted to Children's Hospital in Boston for treatment. Officials said the child had been removed from the car and was being tended to by good samaritans when police and fire crews arrived.

Authorities said speed may have played a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by Abington Police and Massachusetts State Police.
