MANSFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — At the Qualters Middle School in Mansfield, they are hitting the “start” button on a new program that combines two things that many believe do not go together, video games and school. While video games aren’t played during the day, after the bell rings, the school transforms itself into a video game club. The idea stemmed from Mansfield Police and Student Resource Officer Derek McCune, bringing the after-school gaming sessions to the district to make it their own.
Some popular games of the club appear to be Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart, which are played on Smartboards hooked up to a couple of Nintendo Switches.
“It’s kind of self-run, and they’re kind of problem solving as it goes because sometimes controllers go down, so they have to adapt as they go which is good,” said McCune.
Even better, Qualters Superintendent Teresa Murphy says that students can sign up daily.
“[This is] certainly an opportunity for students who might not have been involved in other activities to become involved.” said Murphy.
The idea around the club was also geared towards allowing kids another space outside of the traditional school day to make friends and bond over common interests such as gaming.
