BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — When are kids officially considered adults?

Paula thought it was tying the knot. "I guess when you get married," she said. "We got married two weeks ago, so now we're adults... I guess."

Meanwhile, Jared said getting a job makes the transition from a kid to an adult official.

A new survey from AT&T asked more than 2000 adults that question.

76% said when kids get off their parent's phone plan and pay for their own is when kids are considered adults.

To Berry though, she thought reaching adulthood is more of a mental state. "If I had the money to pay my parents back for their phone plan, and I did it, then that makes me an adult. If I had the money and then I'm not doing it, and I'm still on their phone plan, then I'm not an adult now, am I? I'm still kind of taking advantage of that and still being immature."

According to a WhistleOut survey, one in five young adults are still on their parent's phone plan.

But Jared said once he started earning enough money to pay for his own phone, he came off his parents' plan. "At least for me, you start generating your own income, it's kind of a smart idea to take care of your own things anyway," he said.
